This is a supporting page for Jack Britten’s auction results and market values. For his biography, painting style, subjects, relationships with other East Kimberley artists and artistic importance, please see the main Jack Britten: Biography and paintings artist page.
Jack Britten paintings have a well-established secondary market, with the strongest prices generally paid for major Purnululu (Bungle Bungles) works from the late 1980s and early 1990s. His auction record is $70,000 AUD for Purnu Lulu, the Bungle Bungles, 1989, a large 160 × 200 cm natural earth pigment painting sold by Sotheby’s in 2005.
There is a pronounced difference between the ordinary market and the very best works. Only a relatively small group has reached five-figure prices, while a substantial proportion of successful sales fall between approximately $2,000 and $8,000. The upper end is dominated by larger, important works with strong provenance, particularly paintings from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Perhaps most importantly, a 57% sale rate shows that demand is selective. Almost half the works offered at auction have failed to sell. Britten therefore has a market in which quality, period, subject, scale and provenance matter considerably more than the artist’s name alone.
