Elizabeth Nyumi Artwork values
Elizabeth Nyumi’s paintings have become some of the most sought-after works produced by the Balgo movement. Auction results recorded over the past three decades range from around A$1,000 for smaller works to approximately A$36,000 for exceptional large-scale paintings, reflecting her standing as one of the leading artists to emerge from Warlayirti Artists.
Her market also reveals a clear evolution in collector demand. Paintings produced before 1997 generally sell for less than A$4,000, reflecting her earlier, more descriptive style. From around 1997 to 1999, Nyumi developed the distinctive visual language for which she is now best known, culminating in her celebrated Parwalla paintings. The vast majority of her highest-value works were painted after 2000, when her luminous veils of white dotting, atmospheric compositions and large-scale depictions of Country established her as one of Balgo’s most important artists.
Like most Aboriginal artists, however, values vary considerably between individual paintings. Factors such as size, date, subject, colour palette, provenance, exhibition history, condition and overall visual impact all influence value. Monumental Parwalla paintings from the early to mid-2000s, particularly those with strong provenance or exhibition history, generally command the highest prices.
The auction records below illustrate the breadth of Nyumi’s market over more than two decades. They should be viewed as a guide rather than a fixed price list, as auction results reflect the specific work offered, prevailing market conditions and the level of competition on the day.
Do you own a painting by Elizabeth Nyumi? I will provide an informed opinion based on comparable sales and my experience of the Aboriginal art market.
