Billy (Bill) Whiskey Tjapaltjarri paintings have developed a strong secondary market despite his extraordinarily short painting career. Beginning to paint on canvas when already in his eighties, Whiskey produced only a small body of work between about 2004 and his death in 2008.

His most sought-after paintings are generally the large, densely worked compositions depicting the rockholes and Country around Pirupa Akla near Kata Tjuta. These works are immediately recognisable for their bold concentric circles, shimmering fields of dots and often brilliant combinations of white, red, ochre, blue and orange.

Size matters, but quality, date, composition and provenance can be equally important. Monumental 2007–08 paintings with strong Watiyawanu Artists provenance have historically attracted the greatest collector interest, while smaller works and boards generally occupy a more affordable part of the market.
