George Tjungurrayi: Artwork values and auction results
George Tjungurrayi is one of the most sought-after artists of the Western Desert movement. His finest paintings regularly achieve more than $50,000, while exceptional museum-quality works from the late 1970s, 1990s and early 2000s have exceeded $100,000 at auction. At the same time, smaller contemporary paintings often sell for only a few thousand dollars, making him an artist whose values vary dramatically depending on period, scale, provenance and artistic quality.
This page tracks more than forty years of George Tjungurrayi’s auction history, from his early Papunya boards through to his internationally recognised minimalist line paintings. The results reveal a clear preference among collectors for large, exhibition-quality works from his most innovative periods, particularly paintings that demonstrate the extraordinary linear abstraction for which he became famous. Every sale includes the original catalogue description, provenance, estimate and realised price, allowing collectors to compare similar works and better understand the factors that influence value.
If you own a painting by George Tjungurrayi and would like to know its current market value or are considering selling it, please send clear photographs of the front and back, the dimensions, and any provenance or certificates. I am always interested in purchasing exceptional examples or providing an honest assessment of their current auction value.
