Bilaterally Symmetrical Aboriginal pearl shell

Aboriginal pearl shellwith rare Bilaterally Symmetrical design

Object type: Pearl shell Pubic Cover

Locality: Dampier Kimberley Western Australia

Artist: Unknown

Circa: 1940

Length: 16.5 cm

Description:

This old pearlshell of longka Longka has a much rarer traditional design from Dampier Flats. For every 50 aboriginal pearl shell that you see there is only one of these and even fewer of those have the age of this example.

Similar but lesser examples ca be found in Riji and Jakoli by Kim Akerman with John Stanton.

The deign I think is so exceptional as to make this piece a great early example of kimberley art
